I have forgotten the details, but I do remember that when I came to Debian from another distribution that used PCManfm as default, Thunar annoyed me so much that I removed it completely.
It may have had to do with thunar refusing to recognize mime-types.
So the solution was:
# rm /usr/bin/thunar && ln -s /usr/bin/pcmanfm /usr/bin/thunar
