You're probably still using GnuPG v1 (default on Debian stable).

To get a list of supported hash algos:

gpg --version

See "Hash:" line.

To force a digest algo:

gpg --digest-algo <algo-name>

(Lifted from man page.)

Debian stable has a `gnupg2` package, if you want to make the switch.
