[T.J. ] Actually, if It were to characterise systemd, it would be as a victim of terrible project management, not over-complexity. I'm not saying it is good code, but I do not see it as a far cry from anything else that has been attempted before, like launchd or SMF.
In my opinion, much of the blame for the systemd debacle belongs with the Linux distributors who insist on using most or all of everything under the systemd umbrella, regardless of the good sense of keeping their options open.

Then again, it is also somewhat true that the vast majority of Linux communities are more interested in their personal preferences as a distributor rather than asking potential users what they might want.
