The following is for debian-like distro:

     Then you can use the method of Isaac and write manually your 
configuration file, or use wpa_gui, which integrates a lot of tools to 
help you, like scanning the wifi stations, detecting their properties 
and ask you for the passwords. You can then save the configuration and 
it goes to the same file you would edit by hand. After that, you don't 
need wpa_gui alll the time. Normally you only need it when you want to 
connect to a station which is not yet listed in your wpa_supplicant.conf .
