I think that in the limit, it would be ideal that every piece of
software--no matter how obscure--would have sufficiently extensive
documentation to cover every single corner case of its operation (and I
want a pony, while I'm making impossible wishes :P)

I humbly recommend that the official documentation be structured as a wiki
to facilitate this end. If someone wants to publicly document how to do
something, even if it will only be useful to them at the end of the day, I
think doing so is still a worthwhile effort since chances are that person's
experience isn't so unique that no one else can benefit from the knowledge
gained.
