If I'm reading this [1] correctly, the Swirl is under CC-BY-SA 3.0 so
there is nothing wrong with using and modifying it, as long as we thank
Debian and name/link the project?

Plus, if it is integrated as part of another image it is no longer the Debian logo per se. If it were used as a stand-alone copy, there would be more of a problem.
