Autor: Luke Kenneth Casson Leighton Datum: To: dng Betreff: [Dng] offer of VM hosting
hi folks,
i have a server [originally a blackcatnetworks one] which i am now
running LXC on, and have a spare static IPv4 address available. it's
on a 100mbit/sec link, and the host server is a very low-power 32-bit
dual-core XEON 2ghz system that uses only 4 watts at idle. phil
hands has an LXC VM on the same server and he has root access. i am
also happy to spend some time installing software that's needed:
someone on the #debianfork IRC mentioned gitlabs as one possibility.
the reason why i am making this offer is because i understand the
critical importance of a major software libre project taking
responsibility for its own infrastructure. this is not a judgement
*by me*: i am pointing out that *other people* may judge devuan -
serious unix sysadmins and major players in the software libre world
who, when seeing such a project *not* respecting software freedom and
*not* running their own resources, are immediately turned off, when
they would otherwise very much like to contribute and help make sure
that this critical project succeeds.
there's a story about gandi where a parent came to him and asked him
to tell their son "stop eating sugary sweets!". gandi said "come back
in 2 weeks", so they did, and he said "stop eating sugary sweets!" and
the boy, wide-eyed, with a big smile went "yes gandi!". the parent
asked, "um... why didn't you say that 2 weeks ago??" and gandi
replied, "because i had to give up sugar first".
i've always loved that story, and i hope you understand why i relate
it :) in short: if you want to attract serious unix devs and
sysadmins, you need to *be* a serious unix dev and sysadmin.
abdicating responsibility for hosting of critical infrastructure to a
proprietary non-free service such as github is a good way to ensure
that this project - which is really *really* important - is never
taken seriously.
so. with that as emphasis for the urgency of becoming self-reliant
and self-responsible, the offer is to provide access to a [initially
debian] LXC VM. alternatively there is of course xtrahost.co.uk
(recommended as their lowest-priced VM is 15 GBP per month) and there
are many other options. do let me know, directly (i am subscribed
"nomail") so cc or just mail me direct when a decision has been made.
