well also there's this attitude that Bitcoin is a company like Twitter
or Facebook, and it's a payments innovation for buying food or drink in
place of credit cards.

Truth is that Bitcoin is a core technology akin to wheel or printing
press, and cannot be stopped. The tech goes way beyond simple A->B
payments, and instead reaches far deeper into how humans organise and
assemble together by giving us a new wide-ranging toolkit that we can
apply for creating new forms of trade and business online. I'm talking
about the many crypto features inside and spurned by Bitcoin that
haven't yet been exploited.

Bitcoin does not need to win favour from anybody. But what is important
is to protect the consensus inside Bitcoin which is responsible for
maintaining it's integrity and principles as a technology. That
consensus is responsible for how Bitcoin evolves. I believe Bitcoin will
be dominant, and the lock-in so big that whatever Bitcoin becomes, we
will be stuck with. Therefore it's vital that we maintain it as a free
market technology open and equal for all.

A Bitcoin surrounded by a proprietary ecosystem owned by industry who
spends their resources to create software that imposes their limits on
us, while allowing (or gaining) them participation in a "legit" market
is not a free Bitcoin, and one which oppresses its users. There are many
very subtle decisions that we take now that have long term effects on
how Bitcoin evolves. And it's the sum of these 1000 small decisions that
really determines the outcome of Bitcoin. There's no threat from the
system. We are the system.
