there was some discussion of this a while ago on the older list. IIRC
we decided for the next version to add macros to the header.

The code is very simple, e.g. if (FREI0R_BYTE_ORDER==FREI0R_LITTLE_ENDIAN) ....


In the header, somethin like:

#define FREI0R_BYTE_ORDER __BYTE_ORDER
