yes. actually I don't know yet this slim, must have a look since GDM
is definitely too complex for such a little task... I've been using
XDM in dyne:II, but it lacks the selection widget.

XFCE is something we all loved in dyne:II, while LXDE is also a valid
alternative. I'll meet fruity in two days and we'll discuss about
this, he knows LXDE better than me, in general I guess the ideal
scenario would be a selection with a well configured XFCE by default
and then other choices as LXDE, openbox, fluxbox, awesome and
ratpoison for instance, also evilwm why not :) these alternatives are
all very lightweight.
