Ok, so you want to use your computer as a video-recorder? You might want
to take a look at Cinerella, Kdenlive (not in db), or any of the other
tools. Try to get anything to work with your card.

Also, search for documentation on matroxfb_g450 for details on what it
can and cant do, and how to get around the restrictions of the later.

Search for documentation on debugging v4l (Video4Linux).

...And it doesn't look like there will be any improvements as ASAP as
one would like. The one thing I'm hoping for is the video editor PiTiV
to take off and make video more mainstream in the linux-community, thus
getting more devs to the field.

Why I hope video on linux will be fixed soon? Because I'm a video-guy.
Right now, it's a pain in the ass to just capture video, edit a 2-min
short-film and putting it on YouTube - and at the same time, MS and
others are shipping their operating system with video-editors as we
speak (and have done so for years!).
