This problem turned out to be hardware related, and went away after I
recombined the best parts from several computers. For whatever reason,
lumumba was able to avoid this problem, but dhoruba was incompatible with
one or more of the pre-existing components. I'm not spending more time
figuring out exactly why, since it works. "If it ain't broke, don't fix
it!"
