I had a similar issue with my USB stick but rather
than halting it printed a message "Can't execute
/etc/rc.X" and dropped me into a shell.
Unfortunately I haven't had time to figure out the
cause. Maybe someone else here has an idea.
Just out of curiosity, how big was your USB nest?
Mine was 32MB.
