Ari,
try
X -configure :1
in a terminal window.
It will generate a file /root/xorg.conf.new
Copy this file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Then, hit Ctrl+Alt+Backspace
your screen should clear and come back at the highest resolution it can
handle
if it doesn't come back, but drops you to a command line, type "startx" and
hit Enter
