Hi all,
I installed a genuen on a Qemu VM with a qcow2 virtual disk:
=============================================================
#!/bin/sh
dvddir=/scratch/linuxinst/genuen/
qemu-system-x86_64 --enable-kvm \
-cdrom $dvddir/genuen-6.0.1-lxde-2026.09.23-s6-amd64.iso \
-hda /scratch/qemu_images/genuen.qcow2 \
-m 16G \
-boot c \
-netdev bridge,id=mybridge0,br=br0 \
-device rtl8139,netdev=mybridge0 \
#-soundhw all \
-cpu host \
-usb -device usb-host,vendorid=0x0d8c,productid=0x0029 \
echo "done"
=============================================================
The live CD (boot d) seemed very indeterminate. Sometimes it would boot
to an unresponsive black screen, and sometimes it would boot to LXDE.
Either way, there would be fairly long periods (3 to 15 seconds) where
it did nothing and gave no indication as to what was going on (if
anything). Once I got the live CD running, I'd have to do apt-get
install commands twice to get them to work. I have a feeling that was
because I didn't know to do apt-cache update right away.
At first I couldn't find a way to install from the booted live CD in
LXDE mode. In Void, you just run void-installer, and I was expecting
something similar. Then I discovered that before LXDE came up I could
choose to install, and did so.
The installed version was a completely different animal: Very stable
and predictable. There were a few problems with mouse pointer movement
and visibility, but that might be a Qemu problem. The mouse badly
misbehaves if you adjust the size of the Qemu window, but you can use
the VM in fullscreen and it works pretty well, although still some
mouse issues, but again, that might be a Qemu thing.
As delivered, genuen had a great set of programs for the developer. I'd
have liked to see vim and gvim installed along with emacs, but
installing them was easy enough.
What really blew me away was Synaptic. Being used to Void, I'm used to
having to go without many pieces of software. Using Synaptic I saw (and
installed a few) programs I'd never used before, and very conveniently.
I know this isn't a property of genuen or even Devuan, it's Debian, but
still, it's very cool.
I'll be exploring more about genuen.
Thanks for the great software Aitor!
