I have a similar issue: on resume, the trackpad sometimes freezes,
although a USB mouse can be used as a temp fix. But the machine always
needs a full reboot or two before it can activate the trackpad, and no
amount of xfce4-settings has any effect on the behaviour. I thought it
was a symptom of the current X11, but have not been able to find a cure.
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.

Is that a ThinkPad as well? I'd very much like to get this issue put to
bed.
