I use the NoScript addon which blocks all javascript by default and
which permissions can be set per website.
But you can also manage autoplay settings for specific websites by using
the Site Information panel. Click the icon in the address bar when a
site is open to adjust its autoplay permissions.
And last but not least: To disable link preloading in Firefox, type
"about:config" in the address bar, search for
"browser.urlbar.speculativeConnect.enabled," and set it to "false." This
setting will save you another large chunk of data use.
