On my Andoid 16 tablet, indeed the "USB settings" seems to be hidden
except maybe in developer mode. But if you just use the search box in
the settings screen, then it finds it, although it does not indicate
whether it lives under some menu that I may have missed.

Trying jmtpfs again earlier,
# jmtpfs /testmnt
worked well. /testmnt is one of the standard mount points that I have
on my linux box.

# findmnt /testmnt
TARGET SOURCE FSTYPE OPTIONS
/testmnt jmtpfs fuse.jmtpfs rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0

This time I had no io errors, but later when I tried again and the
Android tablet was locked, then the ioerrors returned.
I had to unlock the tablet and replug the USB cable before I could mount
with jmtpfs again.

So I do not think that was any problem with the USB cable as was
suggested earlier in this thread.

jmtpfs is far superior to kdeconnect and seems to show all the files.
I could delete at least some files and copy others.

Don't forget fusermount -u /testmnt as mentioned in the man page.

Example:
# cd Internal\ storage/
root@shelf:/testmnt/Internal storage# ls -ltrh
