A week ago I finally succeeded in transferring photos to my from my
Android phone to my computer.
Before doing anything, you must make sure that you have a USB cable
capable of high speed data transfer. A lot of cables labeled "high
speed cable" means they charge at high speed, not that they can
transfer data. Unless you're absolutely sure, order a high speed USBc
cable, possibly with a USBa on one end if your computer has no USBc
ports.
Next, before doing anything with the cable, on your computer as a
normal user, perform the following command:
lsusb > lsusb_b4.txt
Next step is to make sure your phone is capable of file transfer.
Connect the phone to the computer with the known good high speed data
transfer and wait many seconds, maybe up to a minute. It should give
you a menu including a choice for file transfer. If not, reboot the
phone (instructions later).
Once it gives you the menu including file transfer, tap file transfer.
Now, on your computer, perform the following two commands:
lsusb > lsusb_after.txt
diff lsusb_b4.txt lsusb_after.txt
There should be one line different, and it should say something about
the brand name of the phone and maybe something called "moto". If so,
your phone is now connected via USB. To mount it, do the following as
root:
1. Install jmtpfs
2. mkdir /mnt/phone
3. simple-mptfs -o allow_other /mnt/phone
Now as a regular user you can navigate to your DCIM/Camera directory and
from there to rsync your pictures from there.
