Hi all,
I'm going to use Devuan for Sylvia's computer. Life's too short to go
distro-hopping yet again. Devuan's a good distro and it's got a great
community.
I might use LXDE, LXQt (even though it has KDE dependencies) or XFCE
(even though it has two real estate wasting panels). Or I might just
use plain old Openbox.
If plain old Openbox sounds surprsing, when Sylvia first started using
Win9x, I set her up with a special menu program I had made for one of
my clients. She's talked about it ever since. In 1999 I created UMENU
(now UMENU2), which is pretty much a clone of the menu I gave her in
Win9x. So all her usual tasks will be a couple keystrokes away.
I'll also set her up with either a dmenu program launcher, or the
equivalent launcher using fzf. With those installed, a start menu won't
matter than much, and if worst comes to worst I can install any old
panel on Openbox so she can see volume, RAM etc.
Thanks for all your help, and I'll be occasionally seeking guidance
when I start using APT after eleven years of exclusively using XBPS.
Thanks!
