My use-case... I follow a couple of web forums daily. There are
specific subforums that interest me. I use separate profiles for
them. In both profiles I use "On startup" to specify the mulriple
subforums to open. Over time the forums get slow and troublesome.
Clearing cache doesn't help. In one forum, I was not synching
read/unread messages. In the other forum it almost locks my machine.

The workaround is to blow away the two profiles and re-create from
scratch. I do copy out the "Bookmarks" file for one of the profiles.
