I hadn't heard of this either but interesting. Ada had push back on the D.O.D.
mandate and their mandate even said that you could use other languages if you
could demonstrate a project cost benefit from using a language other than Ada.
Having said that, there were expensive buggy compilers to throw fuel on the fire
in the early years. Just around the time that the mandate was lifted in an
attempt to get people to use Ada on it's own merits an open source compiler
landed. With the timing of it all and what was said in the report at the time. I
can only assume that the open source Gnat compilers significance was ignored or
it was thought that it wouldn't be up to scratch.
