So, do you mean that the machine has fully booted, offers you a login prompt,
and you can log in as root using a password (or perhaps log in as another user
with a password, and then become root using su or sudo)?

Please confirm that the prompt you get is not:

grub rescue>

and it is also not:

(initramfs)
