..both the nouveau and Nvidia's drivers IME needs both free
and non-free firmware and the below will help if you can't
get your video card going on the nouveau driver, there's
a non-zero chance the nvidia drivers can pull tricks on
your card the nouveau driver developers may be unaware of.
