You can add "-dpi NN" to your Xserver arguments, it should help.  If you
are using slim, /etc/slim.conf has a "xserver_arguments" line.
with startx, you can:

startx -- -dpi NN

NN can be 75, 100, or more, depending on your needs and your monitor.
