great you are pointing this out. in the overwhelming amount of
information this last quarter of 2009 i had to skip signaling you this
article
http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/09/08/17/0014235/Open-Source-GSM-Network-At-Dutch-Hacker-Convention
basically mentioning something i could test myself at HAR2009, really
amazing. all those hackers are brilliant and young researchers with a
strong ethical standing point in finally opening up the existing GSM
infrastructure. i can confirm i could connect it with my mobile phone,
a very old model (about 8 years i guess) bought on the 2nd hand market
(i still refuse buying new mobiles myself, see the Coltan issue).
i just remembered last time i've met Geert Lovink at the park and had
a chat about hacking mobiles, he mentioned something like "yea good
issue, we fought a lot about opening them already in the late '80s and
never really got somewhere", it was still before the bricophone was
launched - but also the bricophone got nowhere. now we have it finally
and i'm real happy, once again we could only talk about this Eldorado,
so i'm not sure we should really brand it now, rather than deploy it
locally for our own initiatives.
